Dr Matthew Smith
Testimonial on Vellum
Dr Matthew Smith was at Leytonstone Underground Station on 5th December2015. He had just got off the train and was walking down steps when he heard screaming. People were running away from the entrance to the station and shouting there was a man with a knife. Matthew saw a man lying on the ground clutching his neck with a huge pool of blood round him. Another passenger had stopped to help and had removed his jumper to use as a bandage. There was no sign of the attacker. Matthew examined the man and saw that his throat was slit and his windpipe was visible. He tried to reassure the man whilst applying pressure to his neck. Then the attacker returned and stood, shouting, about two feet away, on the other side of the barrier. Whilst other members of the public confronted the attacker, Matthew helped the injured man back up to the platform where he worked on stemming the bleeding until paramedics arrived.
Dr Matthew Smith was awarded the Royal Humane Society’s Testimonial on Vellum.
